Day-by-Day Itinerary – Marangu 6 Days

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi / Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha, transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guides and porters, review your trekking gear, and attend a briefing on safety, route details, and acclimatization tips. Overnight in Moshi hotel to rest before the climb.

Day 2: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut (Approx. 8 km, 4–5 hours)

Start the trek from Marangu Gate through lush rainforest filled with indigenous trees, hanging mosses, and birds. Observe the biodiversity as you ascend gradually. Enjoy views of the surrounding foothills and spot small monkeys along the trail. Reach Mandara Hut by afternoon, relax, enjoy dinner, and rest for the next day’s ascent.

Day 3: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut (Approx. 12 km, 5–6 hours)

Continue climbing through thick forest which gradually opens to heath and moorland. Experience a noticeable change in vegetation and temperature. The trail offers stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes and nearby valleys. Arrive at Horombo Hut, take optional short acclimatization walks around the area to adjust to the altitude. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 4: Horombo Hut → Extra Acclimatization Day

Spend an extra day at Horombo Hut to aid your body in adjusting to higher altitude. Optional short hikes include:

  • Zebra Rocks Hike: Short 2–3 hour hike to explore unique rock formations.
  • Mawenzi Ridge Viewpoint: Trek to witness panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak and surrounding valleys.
This day reduces the risk of altitude sickness and prepares climbers for summit attempt. Enjoy the evening at Horombo Hut, rest, and hydrate well.

Day 5: Horombo Hut → Barafu Hut → Summit Attempt → Return to Horombo Hut (Approx. 12–15 km, 10–12 hours)

Early morning breakfast and start the climb to Barafu Hut, the base for summit attempt. Rest for a few hours, then begin the midnight summit trek to Uhuru Peak. Experience a challenging ascent through alpine desert, rocky terrain, and freezing conditions. Reach the summit in the early morning for sunrise and breathtaking views across the glaciers and Kilimanjaro landscape. Begin descent to Barafu Hut for lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight rest. This is the most demanding day, both physically and mentally.

Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Departure (Approx. 20 km, 4–6 hours)

After breakfast, descend through heath and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Celebrate your achievement and receive summit certificates. Transfer back to hotel in Moshi or Kilimanjaro International Airport for onward travel. End of the 6-day Marangu Kilimanjaro climb.
